What is Daylight Saving Time (DST)?

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of advancing clocks by one hour during warmer months so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Most regions that observe DST shift their clocks forward (“spring forward”) in spring and back (“fall back”) in autumn.

Which countries observe DST?

About 70 countries observe some form of DST, primarily in North America and Europe. The United States, Canada, most of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia (partial), and New Zealand all observe DST. Notable exceptions include most of Asia, Africa, and South America. Within the US, Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe DST.

When do clocks change?

  • United States & Canada: 2nd Sunday of March (spring forward) and 1st Sunday of November (fall back)
  • European Union & UK: Last Sunday of March (spring forward) and last Sunday of October (fall back)
  • Australia: 1st Sunday of October (spring forward) and 1st Sunday of April (fall back)
  • New Zealand: Last Sunday of September (spring forward) and 1st Sunday of April (fall back)

How does DST affect timezone conversions?

When a timezone transitions between standard time and daylight saving time, its UTC offset changes by one hour. This means the time difference between two locations can temporarily change. For example, New York (EST/EDT) and London (GMT/BST) are normally 5 hours apart, but during the weeks when only one has changed clocks, the difference can be 4 or 6 hours. Always verify conversions near DST transition dates.
